Eating Lunch Too Late May Make You Fat

For those of us checking our weight and looking to lose weight or not to put on weight, a new research says that, it is not only about what you eat but WHEN you eat it… chewing gum could also cause weight gain, new Scientists have discovered that people who chew gum eat more high calorie sweet foods.

Eating lunch too late may make you fat…This finding could help develop more effective weight-loss plans.
Read below for more…
It’s not just what you eat – it’s also when you eat that is key to losing weight, according to a new study.
Researchers found that people who eat their main meal earlier in the day have a better chance of beating the bulge.
Meanwhile those who tucked into a late night kebab lose ‘significantly less weight’ than early eaters, and also put themselves at greater risk of developing diabetes.
The findings, published in the International Journal of Obesity, could help develop more effective weight-loss plans.
Researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and the University of Murcia studied 420 overweight people who followed a 20-week weight-loss treatment programme in Spain.
Senior author Dr Frank Scheer, from BWH said: ‘This is the first large-scale prospective study to demonstrate that the timing of meals predicts weight-loss effectiveness.
‘Our results indicate that late eaters displayed a slower weight-loss rate and lost significantly less weight than early eaters, suggesting that the timing of large meals could be an important factor in a weight loss programme.’
The team divided the particpants into two groups: early eaters and late eaters. During this meal, 40 per cent of the total daily calories were consumed.
Early eaters ate lunch any time before 3pm and late eaters, after 3pm. They found that late eaters lost significantly less weight than early eaters, and displayed a much slower rate of weight loss.
Late eaters also had a lower estimated insulin sensitivity, a risk factor for diabetes.
The researchers found that timing of other, smaller, meals did not play a role in the success of weight loss.
However, the late eaters – who lost less weight – also ate fewer calories during breakfast and were more likely to skip breakfast altogether. Late-eaters also had a lower estimated insulin sensitivity, a risk factor for diabetes.
The researchers also examined other traditional factors that play a role in weight loss such as total calorie intake and expenditure, appetite hormones leptin and ghrelin, and sleep duration.
Among these factors, researchers found no differences between both groups, suggesting that the timing of the meal was an important and independent factor in weight loss success.
Study co-author Doctor Marta Garaulet, from the University of Murcia, added: ‘This study emphasises that the timing of food intake itself may play a significant role in weight regulation.
‘Novel therapeutic strategies should incorporate not only the caloric intake and macronutrient distribution, as it is classically done, but also the timing of food.’

Military bombards terrorists’ camps

Following the declaration of state of emergency in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states by President Goodluck Jonathan last Tuesday, and the deployment of over 3000 troops and Counter Terrorists Squad (CTS) within 24 hours of the declaration, the military, yesterday, launched air and ground offensive in the thick forests of Sambisa, Borno State, an area which the Boko Haram sect was reported to have used as a recruiting and training base.
A curfew (6 pm to 6 am) has also been imposed in the three states while banks and other public and government businesses have also been instructed to suspend their operations. Some of the residents in Yola, welcomed the offensive with a trader in Jimeta Market, Audu John saying, “the state has been under the control of gunmen for so long, this state of emergency is long overdue.”
Soldiers dislodge sect members
A senior military officer who spoke under conditions of anonymity said that  soldiers attacked the area and dislodged the sect members who fled following the heavy military onslaught.

The source added that the sect was yet to mount any serious offensive stressing that the Nigerian Army was backed by the Nigerian Air Force who are part of the operations. The source also said that soldiers are hunting down members of the Boko Haram sect in all their identified bases in Gashua, Yobe State.
According to the source, “in line with the directive from Mr. President and military authorities to immediately dislodge the sect members, who are terrorising the states of Adamawa, Yobe and Borno in particular, as well as some other northern states of the federation since 2009 to date, our men raided some terrorist camps in the Sambisa Game Reserve, and other camps of the sect in the affected states, which I believe will have a positive outcome”.
Another source who corroborated this claim said:  “So far, more than 2,000 troops have been deployed to Borno, and as I am talking to you, the massive operation and manhunt of Boko Haram members along Sambisa Game Reserve has started”. He, however, declined to comment on the forces sent to the other affected states of Yobe and Adamawa.
The commencement of the offensive has also affected telecommunication services in the affected states as calls could neither be made or received which was believed was aimed at giving the security operatives easy chance to embark on their mission without hindrance.
Defence Headquarters deploy more troops
The Defence headquarters also, yesterday, ordered the deployment of more troops to take care of new hideouts (bunkers) and escape routes recently discovered.
This followed intelligence reports that the Boko Haram terrorists and insurgents are now looking for how to escape the expected bombardments on their bases.
It was further gathered that the new deployments would see units and military formations from the Southern flank of the country being airlifted by Air Force Hercules C-130 and the G222 medium range carriers to parts of the North as back up on standby.
This is as a result of the fact that over half of the standing troops of the Infantry, Artillery and Armoured Corps in the Northern flank have continued to flood the three terror-prone states whose land mass and mountainous terrain is expected to pose challenges.
A military source said: “These miscreants underestimated the capabilities of the Nigerian Armed Forces. What they are seeing now and running into their hideouts is just deployments and movement. Wait until we begin continuous bombardments, then they will realize that democracy doesn’t mean you take the country for a ride”.
The Director of Defence Information, Brig. General Chris Olukolade, when contacted, confirmed that more troops are being deployed from other divisions of the Nigerian Army in the Southern region.
According to him, more logistics are also being provided by the military authorities to back up the deployment.
Olukolade said that no amount of deployment of troops to the troubled areas would be too much until the terrorists are wiped out from the Northern flank.
He said that deployments have already commenced to all the border towns of the three states and that very soon the dividend of the operation will begin to manifest.
Gen. Olukolade declined to disclose the number of troops so far deployed but said that a sizeable number are already on ground and if need be, more will be sent to the area.
“As I am talking to you now, we are not only sending troops but they are heavily backed up with equipment that can stand the test of time when confronting the insurgency”, he added.
Cameroon agrees to cooperate with Nigeria
Meanwhile, Nigeria and Cameroon have agreed to strengthen cooperation and collaboration on trans-border security following the declaration of a state of emergency in the North-Eastern states which share borders with Cameroon.
This was disclosed, yesterday, after President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan met with the Cameroonian Vice Prime Minister, Mr. Ahmadou Ali, who brought a special message from the Camerounian president Paul Biya to President Jonathan.
A statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Reuben Abati, yesterday, said  the special message from President Paul Biya included an invitation to attend a summit on security and maritime safety in the Gulf of Guinea to be hosted by Cameroon.
He said President Jonathan accepted the invitation, and said current global security challenges make it imperative for countries to cooperate maximally in order to protect their citizens.
“As criminality and terrorism have risen globally, it is important for countries to cooperate maximally, in order to protect citizens’, he stated.
President Jonathan briefed the Cameroonian Vice Prime Minister about the state of emergency declared in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa States this week, and assured the special envoy that Nigeria would work with her neighbours to ensure security in the sub-region.
He requested Mr. Ali to convey Nigeria’s appreciation to President Biya for the cooperation he has extended and the warm relations between the two countries.
Earlier, the Cameroonian Vice Prime Minister, Mr. Ahmadou Ali, had told President Jonathan that his country was already identifying members that will form part of the committee on trans-border security.

How the U.S President Barack and Michelle Obama Manage Their Money

You can tell a lot about somebody by the way they manage their money. So the latest financial-disclosure details from Barack and Michelle Obama provide fresh insights into the character of the world’s leading power couple.
The Obamas’ net worth is somewhere between $1.9 million and $6.9 million, according to disclosure rules that allow elected officials to report the value of their assets within a wide range, allowing for large swings in value. Obama has readily acknowledged he’s a member of the one percent, though he’s not nearly as wealthy as other presidents were during their tenures, such as both Bushes, Ronald Reagan and John F. Kennedy.
The Obamas don’t act like fat-cats either: Their investments are mostly plain-vanilla assets that Wall Street money managers might find naively simplistic. Yet the Obamas’ portfolio does reveal a certain worldview and an outlook for the future. Here are five takeaways from the Obamas’ disclosure forms:
In the long run, the Obamas have faith in the U.S. economy. Roughly 15 percent of the Obamas’ money is invested in S&P 500 stock index funds, which in general rise or fall along with the U.S. economy. This money is in retirement funds, so the Obamas aren’t planning to tap it for a couple of decades at least, but by putting a large portion of their overall nest egg in U.S. stocks, the Obamas are betting that the U.S. economy will remain dominant for years to come. These funds appear to be the only direct stock investments the Obamas have.
Ben Bernanke hasn’t gotten through to the Obamas yet. The Federal Reserve chairman has overseen policies designed to push interest rates to record lows and draw more investors into the market for stocks and other risky assets. But by and large, the Obamas haven’t taken the bait. Their largest class of holdings is Treasury notes, which account for more than half of their net worth. At the moment, these relatively short-term securities are paying interest rates lower than inflation, which means the Obamas, like millions of hyperconservative investors, are essentially losing money on these holdings over time.
They’ve got plenty of cash on hand. The Obamas have at least $250,000 in checking accounts, leaving the president a handy fund for covering those occasional posh dinners he hosts for Congressional Republicans. In Washington, however, that’s not a lot of money. Most lobbyists can easily out-posh the president.
They’re ready for college. The Obamas have at least $200,000 set aside in college funds for their two daughters, Malia and Sasha, who are 14 and 11. Assuming neither child qualifies for financial aid, the Obamas will still have to come up with a couple hundred thousand more to fund eight years of room and board at top schools. They could opt for public schools that offer a better bargain, but that may not be an appealing option for two Harvard grads.
Overall, the Obamas seem to be lazy investors. For one thing, they’re still carrying a mortgage with a 5.25 percent interest rate, when they could have refinanced for a couple of points lower (although these days, perhaps even the president can’t qualify for a new loan). And virtually all of the Obamas’ investments are passive assets that require no regular monitoring whatsoever. Of course, there will be plenty of time for the Obamas to bulk up their wealth after 2016.
